Toyota & Lexus Theft Increase

9th October 2024

Recent reports, including a feature on BBC’s Watchdog, have highlighted an alarming surge in thefts of Toyota and Lexus vehicles across the UK. Thefts of Lexus vehicles have skyrocketed by a staggering 513%, while Toyota thefts have increased by 103%.

This has understandably sparked anxiety among owners, especially those with older models more vulnerable to keyless entry attacks. However, there are effective steps you can take to reduce your risk and protect your vehicle. In this article, we’ll explain how thieves are gaining access and share some practical tips to safeguard your car.

So, what’s going on?

It is thought that thieves are exploiting a vulnerability in the Controller Area Network (CAN bus) system in Toyota and Lexus models. By disconnecting part of the headlight and using a malicious device to tamper with the vehicle’s electronics, criminals can bypass the security systems, unlock the doors, and start the engine without a key.

What are Toyota and Lexus doing about it?

In response to the surge in thefts, both manufacturers are offering ‘Vehicle Protection Plates (VPP)’ for the most vulnerable car models, mainly fourth-generation Lexus RVs, Lexus NXs, and Toyota RAV4s. These plates block access to the vehicle’s electronics, making it more difficult for thieves to gain entry. Owners are encouraged to contact their local dealership to schedule an installation.

While Toyota and Lexus are working to improve security across all models—newer vehicles are equipped with advanced features that make them less vulnerable to relay attacks—a recall of older, more vulnerable models is not planned, as theft is not considered a safety issue under DVSA guidelines.

The Rising Tide of Vehicle Theft

Toyota and Lexus have joined many other car manufacturers in urging the authorities to take decisive steps to curb the rising tide of vehicle thefts across the country. This includes cracking down on the online sale of devices used for keyless car theft and intensifying efforts to prosecute car thieves.

With rising insurance premiums linked to vehicle crime, cases like these are especially concerning for Toyota and Lexus owners and provide even more reason for car owners to seriously consider strengthening their vehicle’s security and taking more proactive measures to protect against theft.

What can YOU do to protect your car?

There are various steps you can take to protect your Lexus or Toyota vehicle.

Install VPP Plates

If your car is eligible, contact your local dealer and get those VPP plates installed as soon as possible. These plates offer an immediate defence by blocking access to the vehicle's electronics, making it much harder for thieves to exploit vulnerabilities. Taking this first step is key to enhancing your vehicle's security.

Stay informed about updates

Make sure to stay updated with any security improvements or advice from Toyota and Lexus. Manufacturers are constantly working to address new threats and enhance the security of their vehicles. Regularly checking for updates will help ensure you're aware of the latest protective measures and advice specific to your car model.

Invest in extra security measures

While manufacturer solutions are valuable, we cannot stress enough the importance of additional security measures. Vehicle trackers, immobilisers, and other advanced security devices provide an extra layer of protection, significantly reducing the chances of theft. These systems can monitor your vehicle’s location and prevent it from being driven if tampered with.

Although Toyota, Lexus, and many other manufacturers are constantly working to improve the security of their vehicles and implement measures for future models, it’s important for owners to take proactive steps to protect their cars. Taking these preventative measures not only strengthens your vehicle’s defences but also provides peace of mind, knowing you’re doing everything possible to protect your pride and joy.

By working with a professional security device installer like Safe & Sound, we can help identify your car’s vulnerabilities and recommend the best security solutions to prevent theft. Don’t wait until it’s too late—safeguard your vehicle today. Call us on 0800 368 8656 to find out more.
